SOCW 200B provides an introduction to, and analysis of, major social welfare policies and programs in Canada. The course provides an opportunity for students to learn about the major political ideologies in Canada and how they impact social welfare, service delivery, and the lives of individuals needing help. Social welfare policies are examined specifically in how they impact the lives of women, children, youth, Aboriginal Canadians, the elderly, LGBTQ people, racialized people, and people with disabilities, and how policy can be used to reduce and/or perpetuate oppression of these groups. Students will gain knowledge about how to use policy in advocacy and social work practice and to promote social programs which ameliorate human suffering.
