This course introduces students to the Okanagan oral system of historical documentation, or record of events, and shows how history is one facet of the oral system. Okanagan historical stories, testimonies, and practices are explored and critically examined with reference to the sources, methodologies, and perspectives of the disciplines of history and anthropology. Students will experience a traditional Okanagan perspective of the historical record; develop critical skills in comparative analysis and synthesis; examine the merits of cross-cultural understanding and cultural and national diversity; and discuss relationship building as an alternative to competition and conflict.
