This course introduces students to the knowledge, skills and values of social work practice and social justice work. Students will develop an understanding of the mission and goals of social work practice, the variety of roles and functions performed by social work practitioners, the integration of theory and practice, various delivery systems, the history of the profession, human diversity and oppression, ethical dilemmas in practice, and a basic social work problem-solving approach. A critical lens will be applied to the conceptualization of social issues, indicating the need for broad social change. Students will be encouraged to regularly evaluate their interest and capacity for social work, human rights, and social justice efforts.
