This course is an introduction to sociology as a way of understanding the world. Sociology is a field of study that explains social, political, and economic phenomena in terms of social structures, social forces, and group relations. This course provides foundational knowledge for studying Sociology and introduces its basic concepts, theories, research methods, and subfields, covering such topics as socialization, family, inequality, culture, gender and sexuality and social change. Students will come to understand the many ways in which people’s lives, including their own, are shaped by the social world, and the many ways in which human behaviour and interaction serve to reinforce or challenge and reshape our social world. Students are encouraged to develop strategies of sociological thinking and critical analysis to better understand the world around them.
