This course surveys topics related to the effects of drugs on behaviour. Specific topics will include cellular mechanisms of action, drug absorption, tolerance, addiction, withdrawal and placebo effects. Classes of drugs studied will include alcohol, tranquilizers, nicotine, stimulants, opiates, marijuana, hallucinogens, antidepressants and antipsychotics.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students are expected to be able to do the following:
1. Explain the history, pharmacology, addictive properties, physical and psychological effects of seven classes of drugs.
2. Critically analyze recent empirical psychological studies on drugs and addiction and orally present critical analyses to peers.
3. Analyze guest speaker perspectives on the intersection of drugs and behaviour and articulate reflective insights in formal academic writing.
